Cedar Porch Posts in the Florida Sun: The Upkeep Nobody Tells You About

We build a lot of homes with 8x8 cedar posts. They're one of our favorite details, and nothing beats the warmth they add to a porch.
What the Florida sun does to natural wood
The Florida sun is brutal on natural wood. Without upkeep, cedar turns gray fast. To keep that rich color, plan on re-treating your posts every 12 to 18 months.
It's not a dealbreaker. It's just part of owning real wood, and we'd rather you hear it from us before you build than find out the hard way. Quality over convenience.
